How to Use Your Remote Server Space with MS Windows

Although an FTP Client will serve you much better, you can use Microsoft Windows to perform File transfers. Be sure to follow these directions exactly to prevent yourself from accidentally becoming blocked out of a server. Many servers are set to interpret a series of improper logins as a hacking attempt. Such servers will block that computer from future connections.

Accessing Direct by Browser

You can also log on direct by typing ftp://ftp.globalbytes.net in the Internet Explorer address bar.
If you choose this method ignore the first 3 steps.

4. Windows will attempt to connect to the site.

A box appears with the title "Login As"

You will notice that the box says:

"The server does not allow anonymous logins or the email address was not accepted."

This is good - it means no on can log in without the proper name and password.

            Your account is secure!

            In the user Name Box:

                        Simply enter YourName@Globalbytes.net

             In the Password Box

                        Enter your Password.

You must do this correctly or you will not log on. Spelling is important.

If all is well you will see your directory path and a picture of a folder.

    Notice the small print:

Server: You should see your network path here

            User name: Anonymous

Notice that you still see no files

If you experience an error message or warning sound, STOP NOW!

* If this step is not completed successfully delete your new Network Place and start again. Make no spelling errors. Follow directions exactly. Read the following warning.

Warning!!!

You can not make a login error more than 4 times during 15 minute period at any globalbytes server!!!!

This is a built in protection feature against hackers that use what is known as "Brute Force Attack". Such an event will trigger an alarm and you will no longer be able to access your site and possibly the globalbytes site!!

If you get locked out of your website you must email to your globalbytes contact address and give the IP address of your computer. This may take several hours. Although it can be an inconvenience, it is a necessary security measure to protect website content and parties storing information on other servers.

5.Next go to the upper left hand corner of the browser.

Look for the word "File" on the Menu bar.

            Press File

            Press "Login As"

The "Login As" box appears again.

Enter your user name and password again.

6.Press the "Login" button.

You are now logged in as the owner.

You will see at least one folder named cgi-bin.

Congratulations! You have successfully mapped out a network place to your remote server space.

Transferring Files USING MS Windows:

Get you own server space for remote storage or a website:

                                                MyName.globalbytes.net                                   MyFavoriteTeam.globalbytes.net

                                                MyFavoriteMovie.globalbytes.net                      MyFavoriteCar.globalbytes.net

                                                MyBusiness.globalbytes.net                             MyFavoritePerson.globalbytes.net

                                    MyFantasy.globlbytes.net                       MyFavoriteVideoGame.globalbytes.net

                                    MyCAT.globalbytes.net                          lkr6vn293kdq.globalbytes.net

Windows Explorer:

1. Leave the ftp window Open.

2.Now use Windows Explorer

(Path = Start, Programs, Accessories, Windows Explorer)

3.You can now copy and paste between the two windows. (right click on the file, choose copy or paste)

4.Toggle between the FTP and Windows explorer using the  task bar icons or use ALT TAB.

NOTE: You cannot move files between your hard drive and remote storage using Windows explorer alone. You must toggle between the windows. For better performance get an FTP Client. I recommend BatchFTP, available at Download.com
